NIMART: Basic HIV Management Course for Nurses

Presenters: Dr Lesego Mawela, HIV Clinician NIMART Course – is a 1 week Basic HIV Clinical Management Acceleration Program that tackles the fundamentals of HIV management — prevention, diagnosis, referral and linkages to care, treatment initiation, monitoring and treatment success. You will be able complete the training at the comfort of your home via Zoom. All you'll need is a functional smart phone or laptop. We will provide you with 5Gigs worth of data to enable Virtual learning. Who should attend The program is designed for professional nurses who would like to enhance their knowledge and clinical skills in HIV care. However, Clinical Associates, Pharmacists, Allied Healthcare Workers and Medical Officers can also benefit from the program. NIMART Mentorship Certificate of Competency

Presenters: Dr Lesego Mawela, HIV Clinician The HIV Clinical Mentorship Program is a 12 weeks course that enables participants to accelerate their impact through an intensive learning journey, which will lead to more prepared clinicians and improved competency in HIV clinical management. Participants will also go through HIV clinical competency assessments to determine gaps and for monitoring progress. With a focus on immediate application, participants will work on a series of clinical case studies, individual and team assignments, optional on-site mentorship visits, cases, self assessments, and group discussions and apply learnings immediately to their unique contexts. Participants will also be part of a powerful learning community comprised of a diverse group of fellow participants from a broad range of clinical disciplines, functions, experiences, and geographies. Assessment Assessments are conducted throughout the duration of the course through monthly competency assessments, participation on the online forum, case feedback. At the end of the program participants are expected to complete and pass a final evaluation comprising a test and OSCE. Presenters: Dr Lesego Mawela, HIV Clinician Description The Certificate in Advanced HIV Management enable healthcare professionals to address challenges of a rapidly maturing HIV and TB epidemic. This course will focus on providing healthcare professionals with the core knowledge and skills required to diagnose and manage unstable HIV patients with commonly observed opportunistic infections, co-morbidities and failing 2nd line antiretroviral therapy (ART) therefore ineed of 3rd line ART drugs. The goal of the training is to enhance clinical competency to manage complex patients with HIV and HIV/TB in all populations (adults, children, adolescent and pregnant women) including other key populations. The course will provide healthcare professionals with an approach to the assessment, investigation and management of patients with advanced HIV disease and common infections, complications or co- morbidities in each organ system. The course is conducted using the following teaching and learning methods: Didactic Sessions Interactive case studies Excercises and knowledge tests By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Describe the current HIV epidemic in South Africa, including people with advanced disease Summarise the current first, second and third line ART regimens in South Africa Summarise the general approach to an unstable HIV positive patient Develop an approach to assessing and managing patients presenting with common symptoms in the different organ systems Explain the key principles of HIV drug resistance and genotypic resistance testing interpretation Identify and manage ART treatment failure with or without co-morbidities in different patient populations Manage patients with adverse drug reactions, co-morbidities and drug-drug interactions Who should attend Medical Officers, Clinical Associates, NIMART trained Professional Nurses, Pharmacists. Interdisciplinary teams are encouraged. Course Design The course is offered as a self-paced eLearning course. Additional materials which would assist participants in diagnosing and managing HIV related conditions are shared including national guidelines.
