Ischaemic Stroke

Johanna Nghilifilwa

Stroke is the second leading cause of mortality globally, resulting in >6 million deaths per year, and is the third leading cause of adult physical disability. The majority of deaths resulting from stroke occur in low- and middle-income countries. The incidence of stroke is increasing in sub-Saharan Africa, including in South Africa (SA), as the region undergoes socioeconomic and epidemiological changes resulting in an increased burden of non-communicable diseases and an ageing population. This lesson focuses on the assessment and management of patients presenting following an ischaemic stroke. 2 CPD point has been allocated.
