Chronic Kidney Disease

Luvaseni Pillay

The estimated number of people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) globally is approximately 844 million. Patients with CKD are estimated to be twice the number of people with diabetes worldwide and more than twenty times the number of people affected by HIV. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the burden of NCDs in South Africa is two to three times higher than in other developing countries. The high estimated prevalence of CKD will cause a significant disruption of healthcare provision and HCWs must be prepared for the prevention, early detection and treatment of kidney disease. 2 CPD point has been allocated.
