Interacting with patients at risk of suicide

Mubangu Basemenane

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death worldwide; according to the WHO approximately 700,000 people die by suicide every year, the equivalent of one in one hundred deaths per year. Pharmacies are accessible and frequented regularly by the public, making them well positioned to identify and intervene with those at risk. Pharmacists do not serve the same roles as psychiatrists, psychologists, or social workers, but there are ways pharmacists can contribute to saving lives and reducing the rates of suicide.
