Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

Major advances have been achieved in the treatment of HIV infection but the number of new HIV-infections remains high worldwide, around 1.7 million in 2019 according to the latest UNAIDS report. Data strongly support the need to strengthen HIV prevention and to implement new effective prevention methods. Pre-exposure prophylaxis, PrEP has in several studies been proven to prevent sexual transmission of HIV infection. This course offers an introduction to the principles of PrEP and clinical considerations related to PrEP e.g. assessment, prescription, monitoring and adherence. In 2016 PrEP was approved by several countries including South Africa. This course provides information of how to engage community and key stakeholders for the implementation of PrEP and what impact PrEP could have on the HIV epidemic. Accreditation The course is accredited for level 1: 7 Clinical CPDs according to the HPCSA CPD Guidelines for Health Professionals.
