Renal Failure on a DTG based ART Regimen

Johanna Nghilifilwa

DTG is the preferred integrase strand transfer inhibitor (InSTI) because it has a high barrier to resistance, is well tolerated, is available in a FDC formulation with Tenofovir, and can be taken once daily. Since DTG, TDF and other drugs are commonly commenced together, it can be difficult to evaluate an early rise in serum creatinine.

This lesson serves to, firstly, evaluate potential nephrotoxicities and drug interactions of commonly used medications in the setting of HIV. Secondly, it aims to guide the clinician in drug choice and dosing alterations required in the setting of renal impairment in HIV.
