Since the approval of zidovudine monotherapy for treatment of AIDS in 1987, remarkable progress has been made in developing antiretroviral drugs that are more effective against HIV infection. This has led to reductions in mortality, improvement in life expectancy and quality of care of patients with HIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART), even in low-income settings.
